December Update

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Hi kids,

Just wanted to drop a line and let you know what’s been going on in Boogieland. First off, the songwriting is going better than ever. By your general habit of yelling at me in public, I know some of you are disappointed that we won’t be doing any of the old songs (although feel free as always to download from the MUSIC page). But not to toot my own proboscis, but I’m pretty happy with how the songwriting process is going with all the new material. I hope you are as excited about hearing it as I am writing it. That’s not very likely, though. No one’s more excited about me than me.

Rebuilding the Best Intentions from scratch is a daunting process, but I’ve been talking to a lot of talented and enthusiastic musicians. The plans are in place to get together in the lab and see if we can get some alchemy going. I can’t give you an exact date on when we will debut, but I have the feeling it will still be cold outside.

In the meantime, the Cover-Up will return to First Night Boston with a little help from our friends in Oranjuly, Spirit Kid, and the New Million Box covering The Beatles. For those of you that don’t know, “The Beatles” were a band from Liverpool, England in the 1960′s.

That’s all from over here. What’s going on with you?

Adventures in (Local) Rock Stardom

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Many (ok, a few) of you have been telling me that you miss the whole “blogging” thing that I used to do more of back on the Scampernet, so I’m going to try to use this space for more than just show pimping, selling my music, and trying to secretly convert you all to Scientology (but come on, people – Scientology sells itself. Just check out some of the literature). Like a bored seventh grader, BrendanBoogie.com is not living up to its full potential. So basically, expect more random and hopefully drunk posting.

Yesterday, I was caffienating up for a long day of rock and roll, including the Boston Band Crush benefit for Japan and the Grownup Noise CD release show, both of which were fantastic. While at the Central Square Starbucks, I was chatting with the barista about the shows. After a moment, he recognized me as Brendan Boogie (he was a fellow musician and a fan of the Cover-Up) and gave me the whole “don’t worry about it” wave when I tried to pay. Finally! This is what (local) rock stardom feels like! I’m famous! I don’t have to pay for shit!

As I stepped outside, a drunk guy threw beef jerky at me. Thanks for two minutes of feeling good about myself, universe!

Globe article on Wilburys Weekend

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Right here. Check it out. Thanks to Joel and Bill at the Globe for doing a great job with the article and photo. For once, the Globe got everything correct! No angry emails to demand corrections of the online version! I’m thrilled!

Last night… talking ’bout last night….

Wilburys Weekend

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

We had our first full-on Wilburys rehearsal last night now that Naseem from Kingsley Flood (aka Lucky Wilbury aka Bob Dylan) has joined us. The only downside of Naseem being in town is that I get a little less of Mercy James’ Dylan impression during rehearsals. His Jeff Lynne is spot on, though.

We had to pause rehearsal last night for the Boston Globe to come by and take a few photos of us in costume for an upcoming article on the show. I learned a few things:

1. I can spend a half hour spraying my hair black and people don’t even notice. Apparently, it just looks wet.
2. Emeen from Spirit Kid makes a very interesting-looking Tom Petty.
3. These guys are game for a good time this weekend. It’s going to be a fun show.

So I don’t want you to get shut out. The last time we had a show with a big Boston Globe article, dozens of people got turned away at the door. Don’t let yourself be one of those people. Head to The Cover-Up website and get yourself advance tickets for either Friday or Saturday night. Or both? Hmmmmm?

Acoustic set at the Rosebud THIS SATURDAY

Friday, August 27th, 2010

This Saturday night, I will have the pleasure of taking part in the Old Jack residency at The Rosebud. The last Saturday of every month, Dan Nicklin and his soulful outfit take over Davis Square’s best new music venue. It is a guaranteed good time (Ed. note – “guarantee” in the absolute loosest sense of the word).

In this month’s episode, I will be playing an acoustic set followed by a ripping set by Old Jack. Closing out the night will be a reunion of local rock heroes/Marylou’s News pitchmen The Charms. Should be a very fun night of rock and roll music.

In other news, the rehearsals for The Cover-Up Presents Wilburys Weekend are going great. Trying to embody the spirit and the vocal style of Roy Orbison has been probably the biggest challenge of my music career. Orbison had this unique tone that is pretty impossible to match. I’ll certainly give it the old Brendo try. I’m having a blast doing it.

After the Cover-Up, I’ve got another cool project about which to tell you all. I won’t give you all the details quite yet, but I will say it involves a beautiful woman and (this time) I have full consent. Stay tuned…

The Cover-Up Presents Gay Pride This Saturday

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

I know, I know – you’re all still recovering from the pageantry that was the last night of the Songwriter Residency. Is it time for more revelry already? When do we get to rest?

No rest for the fabulous, my pretties. Another edition of The Cover-Up is happening this Saturday at the Lizard Lounge. The theme of this month’s show is gay pride – gay and gay-friendly artists and icons galore. Here’s the lineup:

Gene Dante & The Future Starlets
Larry Banilow
John Powhida International Airport
Coehlo Bravo
Nate Rogers of the Future Everybody
with guest David Santos of Eddie Japan

With that lineup and the gay pride theme, you know there will be some serious shenanigans. I know I probably don’t need to say this anymore, but I will anyway – this puppy WILL sell out, so be sure to get your advance tickets.

Fleetwood Mac Cover-Up May 15

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

In all the hubbub (or is it hub-hub? huhb-bub?) about the Songwriter Residency at the Somerville Armory, I feel like I’m neglecting my sweet baby Cover-Up. And oh, what a crime that would be. Because we’ve got a doozy of a humdinger coming up in a few weeks.

May 15. Fleetwood Mac. Bam. What what?

Check out this line-up: Old Jack, St. Helena, This Blue Heaven and Tony Goddess’ Lindsey Buckingham Appreciation Society performing the album “Tusk” in its entirety. Special guest appearances by Jim Boggia, Jason Dunn and Glenn French (Jason’s dad).

Don’t let the fact that I’m doing a residency this month consume your entire life. There’s more than enough love to go around. Lizard Lounge on Mass Ave in Cambridge 5/15 8.30 doors $10 adv/$12 door 21+

Thanks for another great Cover-Up!

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Since Andrea and I started this successful juggernaut known as The Cover-Up, there honestly has not been a non-awesome moment in the whole thing.  But this past weekend’s Cover-Up was probably the mostest awesomest so far.

I must admit – I have done a lot of ridiculous shit in this series (my Freddie Mercury outfit comes to mind), but nothing was as intimidating as trying to embody the spirit of Jack Black without resorting to imitation.  Luckily, I had the best Rage Kage that I could imagine by my side – Nate Leavitt of The Blizzard of ’78.  A pure pleasure and joy to work with as well as an absolute shredder on guitar.  What a fun memory.

And don’t even get me started on the other talented performers from that night.  Golden Bloom absolutely brought it as a one-man Weird Al on some sort of hallucinogen.  I had the pleasure of singing (or really slurring my way through) “Sweet Young Thing” with Oranjuly as the Monkees.  Always fun to play with those guys.  And Sidewalk Driver as Spinal Tap brought things to a whole new level – including a to-scale replica of the mini-Stonehenge.

As far as the comics, Ken Reid, Tim McIntire, and Lamont Price turned a potentially difficult gig (lots of drunken assholes that were all riled up by me) into a roomful of people losing their shit from laughing.  Three of the best, which is why I booked them.

Actually, fuck all these accolades for other people.  The success of the Cover-Up is all about me, baby, me!  (Sorry, still in character as JB for a second there.)

We shift gears on May 15 as the Cover-Up presents…. Fleetwood Mac!  Hooray!
